1502 Candle Co. Celebrates Earth Day 2021

It’s April which means that Earth Day is right around the corner–April 22nd to be exact and even though we believe everyday is Earth Day we're always on board to bring attention to the climate crisis.

Earth Day Origins

According to EarthDay.org, the first Earth Day was April 22nd, 1970. Spearheaded by Senator Gaylord Nelson with the help of congressman Pete McCloskey and activist Denis Hayes, they organized campus teach-ins to protest the impacts of industrial development. Through their promotional efforts they were able to unify groups across the US that had been fighting individually and inspired 20 million Americans to take to the streets that day and make their voices be heard about the decimation and pollution of the environment.

That first Earth Day led to the creation of:

  • United States Environmental Protection Agency
  • National Environmental Education Act
  • Occupational Safety and Health Act
  • Clean Air Act
  • Clean Water Act (two years later).
  • Endangered Species Act (three years later)

Pretty wild what one day of protest can lead to!

We are constantly asking ourselves how we can better help fight climate change and our company was featured as a sustainable collection in Fashion Framework’s article last Earth Day. Learn how we continue to fight for a greener future...

Creating Sustainable Products

Unlike many companies, we don’t simply purchase the cheapest materials. We thoroughly research everything that goes into making our entire line of products, from the wicks in our candles to the glass bottles we use for our diffusers and fragrance mists. You might call us picky but we just like to shop with intention. And it’s paid off. We’ve been able to prioritize materials that are recycled, recyclable, biodegradable and made in America while still keeping costs down for our customers.

You might call us picky but we just like to carefully select our materials with intention.

Committing to Recycle, Reduce & Reuse

The three Rs are something we put into practice on a daily basis in our studio. In our earliest days, we repurposed beer and wine bottles to create unique candle containers. Those bags that are used to ship the endless supply of wax we go through? We line our trash cans with them. We’re always looking for ways like these to lessen our footprint.

Offering Our Recycle & Refill Program

We’re particularly proud of our Recycle & Refill program which encourages our customers to adopt healthier shopping habits. How does it work?

  • Candles: Simply clean out your candle container and we’ll fill it with any of our currently available fragrances. Fill a 15-oz jar for $20 or pay $5 to start, then $1 per ounce for various-sized containers. This service is available locally and nationally!
  • Diffuser and hand mist bottles: Get $2 off your next 1502 purchase when you return empty vessels to us.

Want to reuse a favorite container? We can even fill custom containers that have been cleaned out.

Giving Back: 1% for the Planet

Our actions, big and small, do add up. But we also felt passionate about connecting with larger organizations that shared the same values we do, which is why we joined 1% for the Planet

We currently partner with two organizations so that 1% of every purchase you make at 1502 Candle Co. will be donated towards these causes.

Communities for a Better Environment

Communities for a Better Environment is an environmental justice organization fighting for communities of color and lower-income communities throughout California. Its aim is two-fold: to reduce the amount and effect of pollution in these areas and also build greener, more sustainable communities.

Feeding San Diego

The “leading hunger-relief and food rescue organization in San Diego County,” Feeding San Diego works with 320 schools, charities, food pantries, and other partners to distribute more than 31 million meals each year. More than 90% of the high-quality food they distribute has been saved from going into the trash.
