Fragrance Oils vs. Essential Oils

Many of our customers ask: what is the difference between essential oils and fragrance oils? At 1502 Candle Co., we use exceptional fragrance and essential oil blends to create our soy wax candles and refresh fragrance mists. In the simplest terms, this allows us to create a line of home fragrances that are unique, affordable and highly fragrant.

Defining the Two

Those in the industry are familiar with the benefits and debate surrounding essential oils versus fragrance oils. But we think it’s also important for informed consumers to know the “why” behind how we create our products.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are made of all-natural substances extracted from plants like flowers, berries, or herbs. They can be made by extracting oil from the needles, roots, peel or other parts of the plant. These oils have not been processed or manipulated in any way and are referred to as “neat.”

By using blends of fragrance and essential oils, we are able to create a line of home fragrances that are unique, affordable and highly fragrant.

Chemical components of a particular essential oil can vary substantially based on factors like season and climate. This makes it difficult to produce consistent, predictable outcomes using this type of oil in products on its own.

Fragrance Oils

Although they may contain a small percentage of essential oils, fragrance oils are synthetically made. Fragrance oils are a mixture of various chemical components and can be made to emulate a smell that occurs in nature, such as pine, or a setting or concept, such as “fresh laundry.”

Fragrance oils are non-volatile and shelf-stable, meaning they typically last longer than essential oils. These qualities also allow us provide products which consistently smell great and just like the favorites you grow to love.

Benefits of Using Fragrance Oil Blends

Blending the two types of oils offers several benefits. Fragrance oils offer:

• Powerful Scent Throw: Scent throw essentially means how a fragrance is released and permeates a space. Fragrance oils hold a scent better in hot temperatures than essential oils do. Our oil blends are specifically created for our apothecary jars and travel tins, and formulated in a way to produce the most powerful scent throw.
• Greater Range of Aromas: Fragrance oils are available in wider range of types than essential oils. This allows us to create complex, nuanced aromas like our Salt Water and Agave Candle which brings to mind “ocean mist.”
• More Cost-Effective Products: Essential oils tend to be pricey. This is no surprise when you consider it can take up to 1,000 rose petals to create a single drop. Mixing our essential oils with fragrance oils allows us to create products which are much more affordable.

Many customers assume that essential oils must naturally be safer, but this simply isn’t true. 1502 Candle Co. carefully chooses each ingredient used to create our products. Our fragrance oils are phthalate free, vegan and safe for use on the body.
