As the future feels a little unpredictable and the threat of a recession lingers, I’ve found myself reflecting on a familiar time in my life. When I graduated from college, degree in hand and full of creative energy, I stepped straight into the 2008 financial crisis. The job market was bleak, especially for those of us in creative fields. I had a $50-a-week grocery budget and just enough to pay rent. There was very little room for anything extra.

But out of that instability, something rooted itself in me: a love for doing things myself. I learned to cook from scratch, repurpose what I had, make my own gifts, and find joy in the process of making rather than consuming. That season taught me resilience, creativity, and the quiet power of slowing down.

Those values are deeply woven into the foundation of 1502 Candle Co.

Why DIY Matters (Especially Now)

We believe in the power of small, mindful choices—especially in uncertain times. Whether it’s lighting a candle you’ve poured yourself, reusing a jar through our Refill Program, or choosing to support a small business instead of a mega-corporation, each act becomes part of a bigger shift toward sustainability and intentional living.

Our offerings are more than products—they're invitations to reconnect with your hands, your values, and your community:

Candle Making Workshops: Learn a new skill, connect with others, and create something meaningful.

DIY Refill Kits: Bring the experience home and refill your candles on your own time.

Refill Program: Reduce waste, save money, and extend the life of your favorite vessels.

These small acts are part of a larger practice of mindful living and sustainable self-care.

Sustainable Candles & A More Equitable Future

At 1502, we’re committed to more than just eco-friendly candles—we’re building a business that gives back. As proud members of 1% for the Planet, we donate 1% of our annual revenue to grassroots nonprofits doing vital work in environmental protection,  justice and Indigenous sovereignty, including: Native Conservancy, Communities for a Better Environment, The San Diego River Park Foundation ,Indigenous Environmental Network and Native Like Water.

Every candle you refill, every workshop you attend, every gift you thoughtfully choose from our shelves helps fuel this mission.

Slow Down. Light a Candle. Reclaim What Matters.

In a world driven by over consumption and rising costs, DIY can be an act of resistance, a way to reclaim your time, your money, and your values.

So if things are feeling uncertain, know that you’re not alone. You don’t have to do everything—but you can do something.

Make something with your own two hands.
Choose the small business over the big box store.
Reuse what you already have.
Light a candle and slow down.

These small actions can make a big difference.

With Gratitude,
Caroline
